Research & Civic Knowledge

Community Knowledge. Research-Informed Solutions. Equitable Policy.

Our research and educational initiatives connect resident experience with practical questions about urban food systems, environmental conditions, land stewardship, and community well-being in Newark, New Jersey.

Urban Agriculture as Placekeeping in Newark

Newark’s urban agriculture movement connects local food production with placekeeping: preserving cultural identity, sustaining resident leadership, and promoting environmental resilience. Through municipal programs like Adopt-a-Lot—originally launched to transform vacant City-owned lots into productive neighborhood assets—local growers have created pathways toward community stewardship and long-term land ownership.

Urban Seeds Grow, Inc. stewards over 6,500 square feet of active growing space across its flagship sites, Eden’s Farm in the South Ward and Jannah on Grafton in the North Ward. In collaboration with partners like the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), Rutgers Cooperative Extension, and Newark community organizations, we integrate practical conservation practices—such as drip irrigation, seasonal cover cropping, and soil health testing—to generate actionable evidence for urban growers across the region.

Active Research Projects

01.

Eden’s Farm Cooperative Research Initiative

USDA SARE Award FNE2S-13S

On-Farm Field Trials

Urban growers frequently lack locally verified, on-farm data regarding crop yields, soil nutrient management, and water conservation specific to urban soils and microclimates. Supported by a 2025 USDA Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) Farmer Grant award of $30,000, this initiative conducts practical on-farm research examining crop rotation, drip-irrigation efficiency, pollinator integration, and biological pest management.
